About the exhibition
Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof honours Eve Arnold with a major retrospective. The exhibition presents 130 black-and-white and colour photographs from her extensive body of work, focusing on the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
Arnold combined social photojournalism with an unusually intimate, empathetic eye. Alongside portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich and Joan Crawford, the selection includes work on Malcolm X, fashion in Harlem, birth, nightlife and journeys across several continents. The exhibition was organised with Magnum Photos and CAMERA – Centro Italiano per la Fotografia.
AVS tip: a strong reference for portraiture, intimacy and responsible photographic observation.
